Lunar Shadow Mining and Freight [LSMF]

The Hero of Kino
There are certain players in this game who inspire everyone they come in contact with. One such individual is Bing Bangboom. Bing, an Agent of the New Order, has accomplished many things worthy of note, but is perhaps best known for his solo wardec against the anti-pirate alliance U.S.A.T.O. Bing declared war on this alliance, led by the notoriously incoherent character "liberty" and hounded them across highsec and wormhole space for nearly a year, destroying billions of isk in assets, before they finally humbled themselves before the might of the Code and surrendered. It is one of the epic stories that make up the history of EVE Online, and I am proud to say that I played a small part in it. If you haven't read Bing's account, I suggest that you do so now.

Anyway, Bing has been writing of his adventures again lately, and as usual I am itching to follow once more in his footsteps as best I can, and fight some more solo wardecs. In my previous wars I have acted as a simple pirate, but in the spirit of what Bing does, and in gratitude for the 900 million isk in suicide ganking reimbursements I just received from James 315, I've decided to start wardeccing purely in the name of the New Order.

Scouting for targets
Often lately, I've taken to looking at Eve Who as my first stop in the search for new wartargets. Particularly at the top ten fastest growing corporations. This week there was a corporation called "Lunar Shadow Mining and Freight" on the list. A little more digging revealed that they were a brand new highsec mining corporation which had grown rapidly to 60 members and were based in Gallente space. Checking the bios of some of their characters, I found that the CEO was a 2014 character and many members were also quite new. None of them had mining permits that I could find.

I decided that they seemed promising, but that I needed a look at their home system before I could commit to a Foreverwar. So I hopped into a shuttle and flew over there. As I came within a few jumps, a dark feeling came over me. I couldn't put my finger on it, but there were reds in local and I had an intuition that I was entering a stronghold of rebels against the New Order - one of those rare backwaters of highsec where few Agents had ventured, and the locals had fallen into strange and savage ways.

When I jumped into Bereye, the first thing I saw was a mobile depot anchored on the gate and plastered with anti-Code propaganda. My unease deepened. A few members of LSMF were in local. I soon located one of them, Claude Pappotte, mining in a Retriever, and approached him with my intrepid little Caldari Shuttle. I opened a convo.

[ 2014.06.10 00:24:24 ] Kalim Dabo > o/
[ 2014.06.10 00:24:29 ] Claude Pappotte > Can I help you?
[ 2014.06.10 00:24:39 ] Kalim Dabo > yes, perhaps you can
[ 2014.06.10 00:24:53 ] Claude Pappotte > how so?
[ 2014.06.10 00:24:59 ] Kalim Dabo > i couldn't help but notice that you do not have a permit to mine in this system
[ 2014.06.10 00:25:07 ] Kalim Dabo > would you like to buy one?
[ 2014.06.10 00:25:12 ] Kalim Dabo > 10 million isk per year
[ 2014.06.10 00:25:27 ] Claude Pappotte > wow, speak of the devil, I was just talking about you psychos lol
[ 2014.06.10 00:25:47 ] Kalim Dabo > haha, i hope you mean "psychos" in a nice way
[ 2014.06.10 00:26:14 ] Claude Pappotte > oh but of course, after all, you guys are trying to rukle EVE like overlords right?
[ 2014.06.10 00:26:44 ] Kalim Dabo > anyway, as i am sure you are aware, this system belongs to the New Order of highsec, and we require all miners to have a permit and obey the Code
[ 2014.06.10 00:27:01 ] Kalim Dabo > you can find the details at www.minerbumping.com
[ 2014.06.10 00:27:29 ] Claude Pappotte > let me guess, you are the scout, you come in check the sys and a fleet comes behind you, good luck with that one
[ 2014.06.10 00:27:58 ] Kalim Dabo > i am indeed, scouting for the New Order, but it isn;t quite like that
[ 2014.06.10 00:28:48 ] Claude Pappotte > have you come to show me the error of my ways, OHHH am I a bot-aspirant? lol\
[ 2014.06.10 00:29:06 ] Kalim Dabo > now that remains to be seen
[ 2014.06.10 00:29:32 ] Kalim Dabo > i won't accuse you of bot aspirancy until i see it, until then i give you the benefit of the doubt
[ 2014.06.10 00:29:56 ] Kalim Dabo > but you will need a permit if you intend to continue mining in highsec, of course
[ 2014.06.10 00:30:20 ] Kalim Dabo > that's the law
[ 2014.06.10 00:30:46 ] Claude Pappotte > actually i dont, and it really isnt, thats the CODE, different word if im not mistaken
[ 2014.06.10 00:30:56 ] Kalim Dabo > to your credit, you were not afk when i approached you
[ 2014.06.10 00:31:05 ] Kalim Dabo > the Code is the only law in highsec
[ 2014.06.10 00:32:18 ] Claude Pappotte > I dont AFK mine, not my style, but there is nothing wrong with it
[ 2014.06.10 00:32:42 ] Kalim Dabo > i'm saddened to hear you say that, citizen
[ 2014.06.10 00:33:27 ] Kalim Dabo > well, anyway, i'll be on my way
[ 2014.06.10 00:33:33 ] Claude Pappotte > wow, you really are all wrapped up in this BS arent you, this is awesome, mind if I invite some friends, they would LOVE to hear you PREACH THE CODE LOLOLOL
[ 2014.06.10 00:33:49 ] Kalim Dabo > have a pleasant evening and think over what i've said to you
[ 2014.06.10 00:34:30 ] Claude Pappotte > later wacko lol fly safe

Although Claude was not afk at the time, he displayed insolent behavior when confronted by an Agent. He also announced my presence to other miners in local in a way that, I suspect, was not intended to be respectful.

[ 2014.06.10 00:31:26 ] Claude Pappotte > ALL MINERS IN SYS, CODE AGENT KALIM DABO, IS ASKING IF WE WANT MINING PERMITS? HOW SHOULD WE DEAL WITH THIS???
[ 2014.06.10 00:33:03 ] Kalim Dabo > hey everybody o/

Having confirmed my suspicions that LSMF was a rebel mining organization, I then warped back to their seditious mobile depot and captured a few screenshots as evidence, then left the system.

Haedonism Bot extends the hand of diplomacy
Once back in the Forge, I decided to make the leaders of LSMF an offer - to get right with the Code and thereby prevent the inevitable destruction of their corporation. I composed an EVE Mail and sent it off to their CEO, Kirisaku Nardieu, as well as to the illegal miner I had spoken with.

Greetings from the New Order of Highsec

To: Claude Pappotte,  Kirisaku Nardieu,

Hello sir/madam,

I am writing to you today because one of our Agents, my alt Kalim Dabo, encountered a pilot from your corporation, one Claude Pappotte, mining in a Retriever in high security space. On closer inspection, it was found that Claude did not possess a valid mining permit.

As you are, no doubt, aware, all miners in highsec are required to have a permit and to comply with the New Halaima Code of Conduct. You can find more information about the Code at www.minerbumping.com

As an Agent of the New Order, I would be happy to get your entire corporation squared away with permits for 10 million isk per member. Permits are valid for 365 days, after which time they must be renewed if you intend to continue mining in New Order territory. Your members will need to display their permits in their bios, and I would also encourage you to add a statement in your corp description, along the lines of "This corporation is 100% Code Compliant and supports James 315 and the New Order of Highsec at www.minerbumping.com".

Needless to say, if you choose not to take advantage of this offer, your corporation will be considered illegal and targeted for destruction. I will give you a few days to think this over. I am confident that you will come to the right decision.

Have a lovely evening,

CODE Agent Haedonism Bot
Revolutionary Front

Meanwhile, I began quietly taking steps to secure a confidential informant from within their organization. He was able to gather further damning evidence of their willful rebellion against the Code from the LSMF corporate bulletins.

I then sat on my hands for two days and waited for their reply. It never came.

War has been declared...
Today I logged in, took a look at my empty mailbox, and knew that it was time. I made sure that my informant was online to capture the reaction and submitted my declaration of war to CONCORD, then composed a brief message that I mailed to most of their members explaining my reasons.

War.

To: Aeris Nardieu...

Good afternoon gentlemen,

You may or may not have been informed that two days ago I sent a mail to your CEO. I had observed members of your corporation mining illegally in space controlled by the New Order of Highsec. As you know, all miners in highsec are required to have a valid mining permit issued by the New Order and to comply with the New Halaima Code of Conduct, which can be found at www.minerbumping.com

I reminded your CEO of this and made him an offer to purchase mining permits for your entire corporation, in order to get right with the Code. He was also reminded that failure to comply would mean that Lunar Shadow Mining and Freight would be targeted for destruction.

Unfortunately for you, your CEO ignored my friendly message and did not even show me the courtesy of replying. As a result, I had no choice but to declare war.

In 24 hours, our pilots will begin hunting yours and destroying them whenever they undock. If you wish the situation to end, I suggest you convince your CEO to surrender and to bring LSMF into Code-compliance as quickly as possible. Mining permits can be purchased from me or any other Agent of the New Order for 10 million isk per member, and are valid for one year.

Please share this message with the rest of your corporation, it's likely that I missed some members.

Have a lovely day,
Code Agent Haedonism Bot
Revolutionary Front

I then sat back and read the logs from their corporation chat as they came in, then began fitting out my Almost Unbeatable Incursus for battle. Tomorrow they will learn what happens to the enemies of highsec.

Now let's play a little game. One of the characters in the following excerpt from LSMF corp chat is a spai. Can you guess which one? First correct guess posted in the comments will receive a prize valued at 100 million isk. The winner obviously will only be announced after the inevitable surrender of LSMF, for opsec reasons.

Hunting Mordu's - Lowsex Weekend

the Garmur
Well, when I logged in this week, I couldn't help but notice that CCP had released another expansion. It included some nice looking new ships from the Mordu's Legion pirate faction, and I decided that I might like one of the new frigates, the Garmur, for derping around with and getting exploded in hilarious ways, but when I looked at the 250 mil price tag in Jita, I balked a little bit. So I decided to belatedly read the patch notes and figure out what this was all about. They told me that, aside from laboriously gathering LP (never going to happen), you can get BPCs for these new hulls by hunting belt rats in lowsec. There didn't seem to be any explanation of where they might be found, or how rare they would be, or how hard to kill, but the cash register sounds were going off in my head and I had been craving some lowsex pew lately. So I fitted out a Merlin (because in my experience a solo Merlin can kill pretty much anything), named it Godzilla, set an 85 jump tour of lowsec on my autopilot from the Forge (where I do most of my ninjaing) to the backwaters of Aridia, and undocked. I was PvP fit all the way and hoping to find a few kills along the route while poking around in the belts for Mordus rats.

Passing through the Faction Warfare Zone
Pretty early in the route I went through some faction warfare areas. I didn't do much belt ratting there as they were generally pretty active with people hunting for cheap dirty kills, as you would expect. I did spend some time dscanning the plexes, avoided a few unwinnable encounters, and then found a solitary Merlin Nugoeihuvi Edition in a novice site. I'd never fought one of these fancy new painted Merlins before, but am fairly confident of my fit in Merlin vs. Merlin encounters. He was looking to fight also, so we closed into blaster range and slugged it out. We were both MASB fit, but he had more tank and better resists and I had more dps and possibly better gunnery skills. In the end I was out of cap booster charges and well into armor when he exploded. We exchanged "gf's", I scooped the loot and dropped it at the nearest station, and went on my way.

Gathering Security Tags
I kept hunting, checking the belts when I found myself in a quiet system. No Mordu's rats were found, but I did locate a few of those Clone Soldier rats that drop security tags. Never having really hunted these in the past, I decided to try and kill one, a Blood Clone Soldier Transporter. I found that he was quite dangerous to approach in my little frigate. He had webs and evidently excellent tracking for an NPC rat, and I burned through a few ASB charges trying to get into blaster range. I ended up having to warp off and warp back from a better angle before I could get close enough to get under his guns and grind him down. Eventually, though, he died and dropped a tag worth 25 million isk or so. I dropped it in a station and moved on.

During the hunt I dodged a scary looking cruiser gang with a Cynabal, a Stabber Fleet Issue and a Vagabond. To engage them would obviously have stretched the capabilities of my little Merlin. I mean, I am almost unbeatable (powered by the Code :D), but not completely unbeatable. My mystical powers are somewhat diminished outside of my own space, in high sec, I have found. So I ran from them across several systems before giving them the slip.

I probably crossed another 20 jumps without anything resembling a fight. I was getting fairly complacent at that point, and was poking around in the belts in a system with two other guys in local. Neither of them looked too scary judging from their bios, and I had nothing on dscan, so I was willing to gamble that they were docked up in station. I had almost forgotten them when suddenly an Astero decloaked about 5000 meters from me and I found myself warp disrupted. The incident took me by surprise way more than it probably should have, but I recovered quickly, put scram and webs on him and unleashed a few volleys of Void S. The attack turned out to have been ill-considered on his part.

Aridia
I was well into Aridia at this point. This region at one time in my career was a regular hunting ground for me, but I hadn't been there for better than a year and I found it almost eerily quiet. I was seeing nobody in local in most systems I passed through, or maybe one or two at most. Usually with 5.0 sec status - the shameful mark borne by only the most risk-averse of players. It occurred to me that if someone wanted to set up an industrial or PVE corporation in today's EVE, these quiet back pockets of Aridia would be a remarkably safe place to do it, provided you could get your logistics straight, and manage to communicate with each other and actually do something when a Godzilla passes through. Probably safer than high sec.

As my play time for the day was winding down, I came to the ice system of Illi, in 0.2 space, and noted two Retrievers and a Griffin on dscan. I warped to the ice belt, knowing that the Griffin could jam me, but figuring that if I acted quickly I might catch him off guard. Protecting miners, after all, is a tough job for somebody to focus their full attention on. Unfortunately, he was on top of things and I found myself jammed immediately as I landed in the belt. I ran off, checking the market for ECCM modules and finding that the closest was 14 jumps away, too far. Soon, though, it became apparent that the Griffin and one of the Retrievers were evacuating the system, leaving their colleague behind, so I returned to the anomaly and attacked. I overheated my blasters and ate quickly through his shields. His armor was already at 50% when I targeted him, so it looked like his explosion was imminent, when he warped off, having made use of warp core stabilizers.

Day 2, Hunting the hunters
I woke up this morning and started checking the belts. I found nothing but empty clone soldier wrecks in the first system I checked, then moved on, back into Illi. There was one other guy in local there (no stations in system), and I had an Oracle with a Russian name on dscan. He had a slightly intimidating character age and bio, but I decided to start checking belts and try to ascertain his position.

I noticed lots of wrecks and came to the conclusion that he, too, was belt ratting. After a bit of warping around, I found a Clone Soldier Transporter and began killing him. Dscan told me that the Oracle was within 1 AU of me, likely at another belt on the same planet. I reset my scan range for 1 million kilometers (I know it's been around for awhile but I do love the new dscan - no more typing in numbers while you try to do other things), and continued killing the rat. Soon I spotted the Oracle slowing down out of warp, and I warped away, noting that he had landed in the belt at 100km range.

I gauged my odds of coming out on top in a fight. An Oracle, with large guns and no drone bay, generally can instapop a frigate at range, but has terrible tracking and has a hard time hitting small, fast targets up close. I figured if I could get a good warp-in then I could kill him. So I warped to the belt from the sun at 100 km. I found myself still a good 100km from him, and him about 100km from the center of the belt in a different direction. A bit of on-the fly triangulation told me that he had likely warped from one belt up the list at 100, so I went to that one, and then warped back to the Oracle.

I landed at 15km from him and burned in, overheating my warp scrambler. He reacted slowly, and before he could target me and get a volley off I was orbiting at 500m, had scram and webs on him and was digging into his tank. His guns proved incapable of hitting me, and he didn't have warp stabs fit. I debated asking for ransom, but decided against it and just blew him up. He dropped 4 sec tags and a few T2 modules, making it more than worth the risk.

No Mordu's rats yet...
So far I've been to several hundred belts in two days of casually roaming, have gathered roughly 235 million isk worth of sec tags and loot from PvP, have killed three player ships, doing a total of 360 million in damage, and I still haven't seen any of these rare NPCs. It wouldn't surprise me to learn tomorrow that they only appear in several regions, and this ain't one, but I have a few days to kill before my alliance declares war on a particular carebear corporation that I am eager to destroy, and my almost invincible Merlin is still going strong, so we'll just see what kind of trouble I can get in.

A Fresh Start

Murder-Face
It has been some time since I blogged. That's mainly due to the fact that a lot of what I was up to wasn't
particularly interesting to read about (playing around with industry) or required some degree of opsec. Also, I tend to have a seasonal lull in video game activity at this time of year.

To catch some of my readers up, since my last post I rejoined Suddenly Ninjas and spent some time stealing from carebears and trying to bait them into shooting me, with only limited success. I'm not quite sure what I'm doing wrong lately in that regard - my 50% success rate at baiting seems to have dropped to about 5%. Or maybe the local bears are starting to get savvy to my tricks.

Anyway, somewhat discouraged with that, I decided just for fun that I would roll a brand new PvP alt and immediately start solo wardeccing people. Some of the most fun that I have had playing EVE has been hunting war-targets, and I wanted to see if it was possible to succeed at that with virtually no SP whatsoever.

Murder-Face and Evil Astronaut Guild
I created a new character, a female Gallente pilot, dutifully made her breasts as large as the character creation process would allow (of course), and introduced her to New Eden. The first thing that she did was to train Corporation Management, and then she founded Evil Astronaut Guild.

I actually thought briefly about using the fresh start to build a totally legit industry corp in preparation for the coming expansion, but after two days of trying to recruit I remembered why I hate recruiting people, and decided it was time to find a war-target.

During these few days, Murder-Face was training her core skills up to 2 and skilling to fly a Meta 3 fit dual-rep Incursus.

La Academia
I took a gander at Eve Who, and looked at the fastest growing corporations. Some of them seemed to be lowsec or nullsec entities, so I ignored those. There was one on the list who had picked up 30 members in the past week, called La Academia. After digging a little deeper, I found that they were primarily a new player corp, about 40 members with a few older players, founded in the last week and based near Amarr. They had never been wardecced. They were perfect.

The wardec went in, an I went off to work in the real world for three days, ignoring EVE and letting them build a false sense of security. Some of them seemed slightly incredulous about who had wardecced them.

We're a Alliance formed with 5 corps with more 300 members. A trade corps, an indusltrial corp, a PvP Corp, a PvP Corp and a WH Corp. And this is The Academy Corp.

You're a 2 member Corp. Are you serious or is an error? :3 "

Hostilities Begin
The day finally came when I could start hunting. The fight got off to an easy beginning when I logged in at Amarr, fitted my first Incursus, and noticed a wartarget in local. I undocked and found that he had a default-named Probe somewhere in my immediate vicinity. Dscan quickly revealed that he was sitting on a station undock.

I warped over there and found Shigeru Tekagas, evidently afk, sitting on the station, so I blapped his probe and then podded him. My watchlist revealed 10 war-targets online. The hunt was on.

Next, my spies investigated the Academia home system of Remoriu, and found two targets mining in two different belts, in a Venture and a Retriever. I warped over, killed the Retriever, missed his pod as it warped out, then noted the Venture still on dscan, so I warped to the next belt and killed him too, then podded him.

The first stage of this corporation's first war was well underway - the glorious slaughter of mining vessels. Unfortunately, my wife was calling and I had to log off.

The Battle of Nafrivik
The next day, I got up early and logged in. I figured I would check the systems near Remoriu, and quickly identified an Academia Retriever mining in neighboring Nafrivik. I warped in, got point, and burned him down. I noted that he had anchored a Mobile Tractor Unit in the belt, so I started grinding that down as well.

The two war-targets in system quickly grew to five as I was hammering away at the structure with my T1 Ion Blasters. I kept a watchful eye on dscan and a Thrasher and Corax soon appeared. Weighing the odds, I decided to stand my ground.

The Thrasher appeared first. I set my orbit to 500 meters and opened fire. The incoming damage was fairly heavy, so I started cycling my reppers and feeding navy booster charges into my capacitor. I was holding up fairly well like this when the Corax landed on grid and began adding his dps to the fight. I was momentarily confused until I realized that I only had the skills to target two things at a time, and had to untarget the MTU in order to target the Corax.

The fight carried on for some time as I juggled cap boosters and reppers and managed orbits. My feeble dps was enough, however, and I was able to finally destroy the Thrasher. I turned towards the Corax, who was at 11km range, and burned towards him, but the pilot (the same guy who was in the Retriever, incidentally), realized his danger and fled the belt.

Then I gave a "gf" and went back to work on the MTU. A couple more enemy pilots appeared in local. My blasters and Hobgoblin I ground away at it's structure, and I spammed the dscan button every five seconds or so for the next threat.

Suddenly, the Corax reappeared. I burned to him and attacked. No other enemies were on scan and I was able to kill him quickly. His tank was much squishier than the Thrasher had been and his light missiles seemed unable to apply much damage to my armor. Then I finished off the MTU, scooped my loot, gave another "gf", and headed back to Amarr to empty out my cargo and load up more cap booster charges.
Just for fun I awarded myself a medal for the fight.
Later that day I check Nafrivik again and found another Retriever with another MTU. So again I warped in and layed waste to it. Again local filled with enemies, most of whom just docked up in station and failed to provide any assistance to their friend. This time, only the CEO himself, Ego Ero Nummorum, had the courage to attempt to intervene. He warped in with a Vexor while the Retriever was in structure.

I considered dropping point and focusing on the Vexor, but in the end I got cocky and decided to finish the Retriever first. It worked. The medium beam lasers that he had fitted to his Vexor (yes, you read that correctly), and his Hammerhead I's turned out to be completely unable to hit me. So the Retriever died, and the Vexor died, and then the MTU very slowly died while nobody else attempted to stop me.

Skirmishing in Tash-Murkon Prime
At this phase, the war slowed somewhat. Many of the corporation members moved to the far reaches of highsec and others stopped undocking. I roamed and blapped another Venture or two, and gave myself another medal for it just to troll them.

Then yesterday evening I found a wartarget Thrasher, apparently afk on a station in Tash-Murkon Prime. I warped in and started killing him, but he returned to the keyboard and docked up in low structure. Again local filled up with war-Targets, but this time dscan showed them in space in combat vessels - 2 destroyers, 4 frigates, a Caracal and a Sacrilege.

I decided to see what could be made of this. I docked for a bit, then undocked through their station camp and warped off to the Bhizheba gate. I orbited the gate and waited, and soon enough the fleet landed. I kited away as they chased me, and soon they were strung out away from the gate. One MWD Rifter gained on me while the others lagged behind. When I caught up I opened fire and burned him down to low structure, then had to disengage and run as the fleet began to get me in range of their weapons and I started taking heavy damage.

I then moved over to the Remoriu gate and repeated the same tactic. They followed and the same Rifter caught up to me again. With no armor hp left he died fast and I ran away again.

We played cat and mouse like this again, but they had caught on to the game, and were holding most of  the fleet back to warp in on the tackle frigates. I decided to go all-in anyway, since all I had to lose was an Incursus, and engaged a Rifter and a Kestrel, knowing the fleet wasn't far behind, just on the off chance that I'd be able to disengage when things got too hot.

My gamble failed, and I died, suffering the first loss of the war. Since the tally stands at 20-1 and I only lost a T1 frigate, I'd call that acceptable losses.

Following the battle, I retreated to Amarr to reship. I anticipated that at this point they would come and "camp me in the station", and they did not disappoint. I used the next hour to scout out one of their corp members who wasn't participating in the fleet. When I alt-tabbed back I found a convo up on my screen (didn't you used to have to click "accept" when somebody convoed you?).

Anyway, I ignored it, undocked, warped to my instant undock bookmark through their supposed hellcamp, then warped off and went to kill and pod their corpmate, Grimlock Lope, in his Venture. This war has been fairly light on "tears", but I'm pretty sure that Grimlock was displaying some kind of butthurt when he sent me this mail.

Anybody speak Spanish?

The Next Phase
It came to my attention, sometime in the early days, that La Academia is a training corp for a larger highsec alliance called Nuevo Imperio Galactico [IMGA]. Further investigation revealed them to be a hive of carebears with lots of vulnerable assets. I had been expecting them to ally to their newbie corp and help them out in the war, but they failed to show even this little bit of courage. Their failure to help the newbies obviously cannot be allowed to go unpunished.

Unfortunately, they did not take the deal.

Sweet vindication in Inaya

Bored and frustrated with all the metagame controversies I've gotten myself involved in recently, I decided to undock and find some more carebears to fuck with in order to relieve some stress and remind myself why I love this game.

With that in mind, I scanned down an unsuspecting Hyperion flown by a carebear named Jesalina Nissem and warped in with my Police Pursuit Comet to try and coax her into a fight.

Yep...EVE porn...
Caught in a trap
Jesalina had left a Mobile Tractor Unit at the entrance to the mission pocket, and herself was sitting some 70km away plugging away at the red crosses, so I began to shoot at the MTU. I carefully kept my drones docked out of the concern that T2 drones might make me look more dangerous and less inviting to shoot. My blasters soon had the MTU in armor as Jesalina rushed over to try and scoop it.

Meanwhile, a neutral Ishkur warped in, flown by one Krig Povelli. I had seen Krig around and shared some chat channels with him, but had never really talked to him, so I couldn't blame him when he decided to warp scramble me.

I knew Krig was likely to have offgrid boosts, and perhaps logi support on the way, so I launched my 3 ECM drones, thinking to make my escape, as I powered up my own warp scrambler and turned my blasters on him. I succeeded at jamming him, and for a moment I probably could have gotten away, but the red mist of battle was clouding my eyes and I went all in.

Next a Dramiel landed. I knew at this point that I was fucked and the Comet was lost, it was just a matter of time. They took out my drones quickly. I figured the only possibility of salvaging a partial victory from this situation was to go after the Dramiel. Drams can be squishy if you can pull them into blaster range, so I overheated my AB and my guns and went for him. I was applying pretty good damage until the last of my drones died but wasn't quite able to break his tank. Then I accidentally burned out my AB, and my last hope was gone. I tried in vain to pull off some slingshot maneuvers and escape, but it just wasn't happening.

I did get to test out my dual rep Comet fit under stress for the first time, though, and found it to be very durable indeed.

All this time Jesalina sat and watched, no doubt laughing as street justice was being done to the impudent ninja who had been disrespecting his MTU.

Justice
As I warped my pod to safety, I was invited to a private conversation with the Dramiel pilot, Mogdud Sateros.

[ 2014.04.02 01:39:24 ] Mogdud Saturos > maybe snatch the pod

My attackers generously invited me to share in the execution of Jesalina. I jumped into a Slasher and made my way back to where they were pounding on her hull.

[ 2014.04.02 01:42:11 ] Mogdud Saturos > if we get her to eject then just untarget the ship when I tell you

[ 2014.04.02 01:44:18 ] Kalim Dabo > sweet

With a little bit of coaxing, Jesalina was persuaded to surrender her Hyperion. My allies walked away a little bit richer, and I made a few new friends in the region. And friends with logi and Orca support are good friends to have indeed.

Suddenly Vindication
I made a quick trip to the Jita to refit and get ready for the next adventure. This time I opted to go for an Ishkur. Since it was late, I went to sleep after I had returned to Osmon fully equipped.

Then this morning I got up and went out to have a quick scan of the neighborhood. The pickings were a little bit slim, but in Inaya, near the Osmon gate, I located a pair of carebears. One was in a Vindicator and the other in a Drake Navy Issue, and they were in a mission pocket together. I was skeptical of trying to take on both of them solo in an assault frigate, but figured I'd warp in with my cloaky scout and at least try and assess the situation. They were both hanging around in a cleared mission room, looting and salvaging their wrecks.

That's when I noticed that the Vindicator pilot had an active killright.

I checked it and saw it was for 100 million isk. Then I checked my wallet and saw that I had 101,269,878.66 isk. (Yeah, I know. I must be terrible at EVE.)

I hopped in my Ishkur and warped in. The Vindi pilot sat perfectly still while I burned out 60 km to him, activated the killright and scrammed him. He may have been afk, because it took about 5 minutes for him to pull in his salvage drones and get out his Hobgoblins, which I then dispatched. He had no hope whatsoever of landing a single hit on me with his 425mm railguns while I orbited at 500m, so without drones to help him, it was just a matter of slowly burning him down.

Meanwhile, the Navy Drake pilot moved closer and gave me the carebear stare. Since I had activated a killright, there was no need for me  to incur a suspect flag this time, and his only hope of stopping me was to set his safety to red, commend his soul to CONCORD, and open fire. This he did without making any noticeable impact on my shields. It was poetic to see CONCORD, so often touted as the saviour of carebears, show up to put a carebear down.

With his only hope of assistance gone and criminally flagged, the Vindicator pilot accepted my conversation and we began to discuss the terms of his surrender.

[ 2014.04.02 13:00:08 ] 1 CTPAHHUK > да (yes)

[ 2014.04.02 13:04:15 ] 1 CTPAHHUK > стой (stop)

My wallet blinked and I saw that he had sent 200 mil.

[ 2014.04.02 13:04:33 ] Kalim Dabo > ok, now send 200 more - the ransom is 400 mil

[ 2014.04.02 13:05:26 ] Kalim Dabo > thanks for doing business!

Then I podded him.

I looted as much as I could carry from the Vindi wreck, then went back to the station to dump it and come back to loot the Navy Drake and get the rest. It ended up taking several trips to get it all - large railguns are large.

As I went back for the last time, the Navy Drake pilot who had attempted to gank me evidently had lost his criminal flag and come back in an Impairor to get what he could. We landed on the acceleration gate at the same time and warped in to the mission room. Then it was a race to the wreck. He convoed me.

I was about 20km form him and had a generous lead in the race at this point, when he opened fire on me once again. I loled and set my drones on him as I turned around. His rookie ship was no match for my elite PvP excellence however, and I quickly destroyed him, then killed his pod too.

After all this went down I was invited to yet another conversation with the Vindicator pilot.

[ 2014.04.02 13:09:23 ] Kalim Dabo > how can i help you?
[ 2014.04.02 13:10:09 ] 1 CTPAHHUK > так не делают деньги верни (so do not bring back the money)

[ 2014.04.02 13:12:14 ] Kalim Dabo > i'll donate it to charity, how about that?
[ 2014.04.02 13:13:18 ] 1 CTPAHHUK > God Stobie

I work hard to be a successful EVE pirate, and obviously I have a great deal of pride in my workmanship. That said, what would the community think of me if I went around giving ransom money back after I have collected it? Especially since the individual in question stiffed me, paying me only 200 mil when I asked for 400.

However, I do have a heart and sympathize with 1 CTPAHHUK's loss. So as a compromise I agreed to donate the 200 million isk to charity in his name. After all, he's a rich Vindicator pilot, obviously he can afford it. So in that spirit, I have sent the 200 mil to James 315 and the New Order of Highsec, to purchase 200 shares in 1 CTPAHHUK's name. I'm sure that James will use the money to do good works all over high sec.

Killing it forward
This thrilling highsec game content was dedicated to all the carebears out there in forums and blogs calling for additional nerfs to highsec PvP and pirate culture. In particular, I dedicated these murders to Mr. Ripard Teg for his recent heresy. If he has a soul he will reimburse their losses.

The killings will continue until all carebears HTFU.

Impeach Ripard Teg?

I told my readers about a year ago that I wouldn't ever write about CSM politics again. Before I ever started my own EVE blog, I was a fan of other blogs like Finders & Keepers, Rifter Drifter, Hallo Can I Violence Ur Boat, My Loot Your Tears, and other greats. All of the blogs that I enjoyed, and still enjoy, are those which focus on the actual experience of EVE, and don't try to lecture the reader on space politics or ideas for game development. I have tried to follow that principle myself - to blog about the adventures I'm having in this amazing game and leave the readers to think for themselves when it comes to all the boring crap.

Today, I'm going to break my own rule and talk about the CSM. Or rather, about one CSM member in particular - Mr. Ripard "Jester" Teg, author of the popular EVE blog "Jester's Trek".

Why talk about Ripard Teg?
Excellent question. I want to talk about Ripard Teg today, because he recently instigated a pretty significant scandal for our game community that resulted in the permanent ban of well-known isk doubler Erotica 1.

Everyone who is even remotely connected knows the details of that scandal and has their opinion about it. My own feeling is that CCP was justified in the decision that they made, but I'm not really here to talk about that today.

What I want to discuss is the role of Mr. Teg in the affair, whether he did wrong, and whether there should be any consequences if he did.

What did Ripard Teg do wrong?
If you were to post in the EVE online forums, "Hey everybody, I've become aware of a situation in which several players harassed another player, and I've got a Teamspeak recording of the whole thing," the thread would almost immediately be locked. You would no doubt be informed that you can file a petition to report any violations of the EULA or ToS.

"...this is the EVE equivalent of the Jerry Springer show. In lieu
of paternity tests and transgender midget love triangles we've got a
bunch of guys picking on a man-child. Ripard's playing Springer,
putting the thing on a stage, publicly shaking his head and delivering
shame-on-all-of-you's so that he may run for re-election as mayor of
Cincinnati. After all, he assumes, none of us are bright enough to see
through the charade. All of us voting idiots will just eat this shit up."
- Daniel Whitaker
Since Ripard Teg is a member of the CSM, it is safe to assume that he knows the correct process for reporting rule violations. It is also likely that he has additional channels of his communication at his disposal in the case that he feels the need to bring a situation to the attention of the developers directly.

Yet, for some reason, rather than using these legitimate channels, Teg chose to publish a public call-out thread in his blog, rife with inaccuracies, exaggerations, and the most blatant sort of rumor-mongering. The content which he reported was a legitimate cause for concern, but the way he reported it was calculated to incite a virtual lynch mob.

There are only three reasons that I can think of why he would choose to do this, all of them ugly. The first and most straightforward is that he wanted to coerce CCP to hand down a ban or face wider media attention for supporting griefers. In other words, he was trying to bully CCP into doing things his way. The second is that he just wanted the attention, that he gets off somehow on it. The third possibility is that creating this scandal fuels his own political agenda as a CSM. He has long argued that highsec PvP needs continued nerfs, so perhaps he published this as an attempt to discredit the minerbumping and Belligerent Undesirables communities and the playstyles that they represent.

But EVE culture is bad! Drastic measures need to be taken to purge the Reavers from the game...
This seems to be Mr. Teg's argument. He has fallen into the carebear mentality of associating in-game criminal activities with out-of-game criminal behavior. This idea is so absurd that it is almost not worth rebutting.

EVE Online is a role playing game, and from what I understand, it is one of the few online role playing games available on the market which allows you to play as a bad person. Since I have never played any other online game, I can't say for sure whether this is true or not. In any case, I can tell you that it is a lot of fun to roleplay a douchebag criminal type, even if you are a genuinely nice guy in the real world.

When I first was invited to join Belligerent Undesirables, I had a bit of apprehension that these highsec "griefers" wouldn't be nice people to be around. I couldn't have been more wrong. Outsiders never believe me when I tell them that the "griefer" community is the most mature community in the game, but I assure you that it is true. BU chat is only slightly less PG rated than chat.e-uni (about the only time you see profanity is when we are quoting what some irate carebear called us). I have never seen a newbie in BU or minerbumping chat who wasn't getting straightforward answers to his questions and genuine offers of help.

Teg would have you believe that the infamous "bonus round" tape is a typical example of the "Reaver" culture that he is allegedly trying to save us all from, when in fact it is anything but. No doubt he scoured the internet for the worst example of EVE "griefing" that he could find, and then made sure to represent it as being even worse than it actually was, so that readers who were too lazy to listen for themselves would know how they were supposed to feel.

Ohno! The Reavers are in Jita!
What should be done with him?
I generally don't like to call for players to be punished by CCP. Since this is my blog though, and I am
not a member of nor candidate for CSM, I think I will. If it was my decision to make, I'd probably boot him from the CSM and give him a temporary ban. Since he's not running for reelection, booting him would be a symbolic gesture - a small statement that yes, CCP holds CSM members to a higher standard of personal conduct. As should they.

I don't expect that to actually happen, though, so instead, Ripard Teg should voluntarily step down, and publish an apology to the community for the disrespect for our collective maturity and intelligence that he has shown. Of course, yeah that isn't going to happen either. I am not even sure if he yet has the perspective to see how badly in the wrong he has been. I will give him the benefit of the doubt and assume that he is actually a good person behind the keyboard, and will eventually come to understand.

Really, we know that nothing is going to happen to Ripard Teg. Perhaps the best we can hope for is some statement from Devs, current CSM members or CSM candidates to say,"Yes, Ripard Teg was out of line. Yes, he abused his position to discredit a segment of the community and that is not ok. Yes, a good CSM is supposed to represent the whole community, from the wide-eyed newbies to the lifelong carebears to the small gang PvPers to the wormholers to the nullbears and yes, by God, even the pirates gankers and scammers."

Grand Theft Spaceship

Inspired by my fellow EVE blogger Feyd Rautha Harkonnen and his kill-it-forward program, I took to the skies of Osmon today in a shiny new Police Pursuit Comet to try to kill a carebear in retaliation for forum whiners calling for continued nerfs to highsec PvP. I had 2 or 3 false starts, bears who just wouldn't engage in spite of my best efforts to make an ass of myself.

Finally I warped in on a player named Exterminator CaveMan, who was running a mission in a Drake. He had just finished killing the rats, and was cleaning up the site. I went flashy by shooting at his MTU, and he quickly redboxed me.

The Game
I launched my 3 Hobgoblin 2s and quickly put down all of his Hob 1s as I warp scrambled his hull, then opened a convo with him.

[ 2014.03.28 01:44:22 ] Exterminator CaveMan > hello
[ 2014.03.28 01:44:39 ] Kalim Dabo > o/
[ 2014.03.28 01:44:52 ] Kalim Dabo > 50 mil or the drake dies
[ 2014.03.28 01:45:15 ] Exterminator CaveMan > ok ass long as you stop
[ 2014.03.28 01:45:24 ] Kalim Dabo > ok, send the isk, i'll stop
[ 2014.03.28 01:45:43 ] Exterminator CaveMan > done

My wallet blinked and I checked it, finding to my surprise that he had actually sent the 50 million. I was
so taken aback by the speed with which he paid the ransom that I wasn't sure what to do next, but luckily my Suddenly Ninjas training kicked in and I thought of trying to steal his Drake.

[ 2014.03.28 01:46:09 ] Kalim Dabo > ok, there's just one more thing
[ 2014.03.28 01:46:14 ] Exterminator CaveMan > remove the warp disruptor pls

[ 2014.03.28 01:47:26 ] Kalim Dabo > understand?
[ 2014.03.28 01:47:38 ] Exterminator CaveMan > I will bring one to you - shuttle do ??
[ 2014.03.28 01:47:44 ] Kalim Dabo > sure
[ 2014.03.28 01:48:01 ] Exterminator CaveMan > I will warp a shuttle in, if you remove the disruptor when it comes in
[ 2014.03.28 01:48:20 ] Kalim Dabo > sure

My intent, of course, was to get him to eject and go get a rookie ship, thereby allowing me to board his Drake, but instead he brought in an alt in a shuttle - I just rolled with it.

[ 2014.03.28 01:48:30 ] Exterminator CaveMan > warping in now...

[ 2014.03.28 01:51:05 ] Exterminator CaveMan > why not
[ 2014.03.28 01:51:07 ] Kalim Dabo > sorry, was a diabolical ruse
[ 2014.03.28 01:51:26 ] Kalim Dabo > you were supposed to eject, therby allowing me to steal your ship :D
[ 2014.03.28 01:51:41 ] Kalim Dabo > i'm sorry to say i have to kill you now

My finger twitched towards the F1 button, when to my surprise, he ejected from his Drake and warped off with his pod.

[ 2014.03.28 01:52:13 ] Kalim Dabo > wow, thanks
[ 2014.03.28 01:52:21 ] Kalim Dabo > o7

Revenge of the Carebear
I then had my alt warp in with a pod, board the Drake, and deliver it to station. That done, I spent a moment inspecting my surroundings, when suddenly, an avenging Cormorant warped to my position and opened fire. I chortled with bloodlust and glee and targeted him, switched to null, set my orbit at 7500m, and set my drones on him.

The Cormorant kited away from me, and I started taking an unexpected amount of damage. He was microwarpdrive and rail-fit, contrary to my expectations, and was tearing into my armor in no time. My dual reppers struggled to keep up. He also showed good sense in reacting to my drones, blapping my first wave of 3 Hob 2s within seconds, and then making short work of my second wave of 3 Hornet EC-300s.

Once he had finished off my drones, he then made his fatal error, moving close enough that I could get scram on him and move into blaster range. It was an amazing fight, and he showed both balls and competence wholly unexpected in a mission bear, and almost took down my blinged Comet with a T1, low-SP dessy.

The Aftermath
I then returned to station to check out what I had stolen and to repair my ship and make it ready for more shenanigans, when Exterminator opened a second convo.

[ 2014.03.28 02:03:32 ] Kalim Dabo > that was fun, no?
[ 2014.03.28 02:03:37 ] Exterminator CaveMan > can I ask a couple of questions pls

[ 2014.03.28 02:03:52 ] Exterminator CaveMan > when I warped in the drake and tayra were not on my map - were they gone ??
[ 2014.03.28 02:04:21 ] Kalim Dabo > i'm not sure about the tayra, but yes, i stole the drake
[ 2014.03.28 02:04:34 ] Kalim Dabo > had an alt warp in and board it, then leave

[ 2014.03.28 02:05:25 ] Kalim Dabo > that was actually a really good fight with the cormorant, you almost had me
[ 2014.03.28 02:05:49 ] Kalim Dabo > i thought you had blasters, so i kept out at range and your rails were killing me
[ 2014.03.28 02:05:52 ] Exterminator CaveMan > I put it all up to experience....
[ 2014.03.28 02:06:04 ] Kalim Dabo > you also killed the drones first which was a smart move
[ 2014.03.28 02:06:15 ] Exterminator CaveMan > what did you use to repair your armor so quickly - my rails became ineffective
[ 2014.03.28 02:06:38 ] Kalim Dabo > i have 2 small armor reppers
[ 2014.03.28 02:06:43 ] Exterminator CaveMan > the drone kill mean't you paid something for the fight, and kept them off my back...
[ 2014.03.28 02:06:51 ] Kalim Dabo > and a cap booster to keep them running
[ 2014.03.28 02:06:55 ] Kalim Dabo > yep
[ 2014.03.28 02:07:07 ] Exterminator CaveMan > They do seem to work well...
[ 2014.03.28 02:07:23 ] Kalim Dabo > yeah, i'm pretty happy with the fit
[ 2014.03.28 02:07:37 ] Kalim Dabo > it doesn't work well against high alpha damage though
[ 2014.03.28 02:07:38 ] Exterminator CaveMan > thanks again....   I am training up a combat pilot so it is good to understand how the different equipment can work
[ 2014.03.28 02:07:44 ] Kalim Dabo > sure
[ 2014.03.28 02:07:48 ] Exterminator CaveMan > what is high alpha ??
[ 2014.03.28 02:08:00 ] Kalim Dabo > the damage from a single volley
[ 2014.03.28 02:08:06 ] Exterminator CaveMan > ta
[ 2014.03.28 02:08:18 ] Kalim Dabo > :)
[ 2014.03.28 02:08:22 ] Exterminator CaveMan > not sure why my missles could not target you from the drake
[ 2014.03.28 02:09:14 ] Kalim Dabo > i had ecm drones out at first, maybe you were jammed?
[ 2014.03.28 02:09:56 ] Exterminator CaveMan > so having ecm drones, means your ship does not need a ecm on board, leaving you free to fit the other modules....
[ 2014.03.28 02:10:27 ] Exterminator CaveMan > can I have my 50mil back now....  you did get a drake out of it ?
[ 2014.03.28 02:10:42 ] Kalim Dabo > yes, but they have less chance of working than ECM modules on a dedicated ECM ship like a griffin or blackbird
[ 2014.03.28 02:11:10 ] Kalim Dabo > i'm afraid i need to keep the isk :D what sort of pirate would i be if i gave it back?
[ 2014.03.28 02:11:31 ] Exterminator CaveMan > thought as much - till next time then my hearties....
[ 2014.03.28 02:12:24 ] Kalim Dabo > best of luck to you

The Spoils
In addition to the 50 million isk "ransom" that I collected, the Drake that I stole was fitted with 6 Caldari Navy Heavy Missile Launchers, which are worth about 50 mil each in Jita, so the whole ship netted me something in the neighborhood of 350 million isk. The Cormorant dropped a Coreli A-Type 1mn MWD worth roughly 26 million. So the evening's entertainment earned me a total of about 426 million isk for about an hour's work. Who says crime doesn't pay?

Killing-it-Forward
The good news is that I killed a carebear. The bad news is that he turned out to be the greatest carebear of all time and nearly raped me with his counterattack. In fact, by the authority vested in me as a pirate by the Gods of Pew, I hereby declare that Exterminator CaveMan is No Longer a Carebear, but a worthy young combat pilot that any pirate organization should be proud to have on their crew.

If I weren't so absurdly space-poor right now, I would shower him with isk for the courage that he showed tonight. If you are feeling generous, I would encourage you to send him a contribution.

That said, I can not in good conscience count this as the contribution to the kill-it-forward program that I had intended, and so I will need to get back out there and kill another bear. Because God wills it. Or so I hear.
